The National and State Parks do not allow dogs on any trails but some of the beaches and campgrounds welcome dogs. Pets are allowed on Crescent Beach, Gold Bluffs Beach and the Freshwater Spit Lagoon. The campgrounds that allow pets include Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park campground, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park campground and Gold Bluffs Beach campground. One way to see a number of redwood groves with dogs is to take the Newton B. Drury Scenic Bypass off of Highway 101. You may see large elk grazing near the parking lots as you drive through the park. Dogs are also allowed to walk along some gravel roads. Two roads that can be walked along with dog include Cal Barrel Road (3 miles long) and Howland Hill Rd (6 miles long). These roads will usually not be too crowded with cars except at the busiest times. Old growth Redwood groves line these gravel roads. Pets must be leashed and attended at all times and please clean up after them.
