Map

This 25 mile trail follows the old Fernley and Lassen Branch Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad. It begins in Susanville at 4,200 feet and climbs 1,300 feet to a high point of 5,500 feet. Following the Susan River, the trail crosses over the river many times and passes through a former railroad tunnel. During the winter the trail's upper segment, located west of Highway 36, is used for cross-country skiing. Dogs on leash are allowed. Please clean up after your dog. To check on current trail conditions, call the Eagle Lake BLM Field Office at 530-257-0456. To get there from Alturas, take Highway 36 to Susanville. Follow Main Street to the stop light at the bottom of the hill by historic Uptown Susanville. Turn left on Weatherlow Street which becomes Richmond Road. Follow Richmond Road .5 miles across Susan River to Susanville Railroad Depot Trailhead and Visitor Center.
