According to the National Park Service (NPS), Harpers Ferry was made into a national historical site because of a number of different events. The NPS states "Harpers Ferry witnessed the first successful application of interchangeable manufacture, the arrival of the first successful American railroad, John Brown's attack on slavery, the largest surrender of Federal troops during the Civil War, and the education of former slaves in one of the earliest integrated schools in the United States." Dogs are allowed on leash at all outdoor areas of the park. However, dogs are not allowed on the shuttle buses from the visitors center to the historic area. There is limited parking at the historic area next to the train station for you to park with your dog. Otherwise, you will need someone to stay with your dog while someone parks the car and takes the shuttle bus back. Once at the historical town, you can walk around town, on trails and a pedestrian bridge over the river.
