The park was established as a feeding and resting area for over 200 species of migratory birds. There has been more than 400 acres of agricultural fields planted with food for them. There is also roughly 2200 acres of short-grass prairie, 900 acres of lakes, and 200 acres of woodlands or other lands. Interpretive/environmental programs are available upon request, and there is a variety of land and water recreational opportunities plus primitive camping on the west side of Lake 13. Dogs of all sizes are allowed for no additional fee. Dogs are allowed on the trails unless otherwise marked, and they must be leashed and cleaned up after. The primitive campsite is seasonal and has a 3 day stay limit. Restrooms are located at the entrance road leading into Lake 13. This RV park is closed during the off-season. The camping and tent areas also allow dogs. There is a dog walk area at the campground. There are no electric or water hookups at the campgrounds.
