Ship Travel with Dogs

Remember to always bring a doggie life jacket for your pooch when on the water!

Look here for alternative air travel for dogs.

The Current Ship Option Available from the United States to Europe

Currently the only ship we know of that can transport a dog between the U.S. and Europe is the QE2, but please talk to them about any possible quarantine restrictions. Pets are not allowed in the room cabin with you. They are required to stay in a limited number of kennels that can hold up to about a mid-size dog. I believe you can visit with your dog once or twice a day. Click here for the Cunard/QE2 web site.

Freighter/Cargo Ships - United States to Europe

Updated April 3, 2002: Unfortunately, the Mineral Shipping service has canceled their route between the U.S. and Europe.

Updated February 12, 2002: There is a Mineral Shipping service between North America and Holland that will take dogs (of any size!), cats and cars.

Freighter/Cargo Ships

The only other dogs allowed option we know of is the transatlantic container/cargo liner service called Safmarine. They offer year-round container ship connections between the US and Cape Town, South Africa, and between Cape Town, South Africa, and European ports. In order to travel on their ships, you must visit South Africa en route and you must book two voyages (one between the U.S. and South Africa and the other between South Africa and Europe). All South African veterinary requirements must be met for such a stay. Any reputable freighter agent can book Safmarine voyages for you. For more information, please visit their website at http://www.anr.safmarine.co.za.
